Moles – those brown spots on your body might be trying to tell you something.  It’s your job to examine them at least once a month.  Most moles are non-cancerous, but it’s still good to be aware of their appearance.  WebMD says, “Melanoma is one of the most common cancers in people younger than age 30.”

The best way to prevent melanoma is simple: stay out of the sun.  Your body needs the sun to make vitamin D, however, there’s no need to fry your skin.  Wear protection like hats or cover-ups and use sunscreen if you know you’re going to be exposed for long periods of time.  If you think your safe on a cloudy day think twice because you’re not.  UV rays can reach you all year round no matter whether the sky is cloudy or clear. 

The American Academy of Family Physicians uses the following ABCDEs to help detect cancerous moles, so grab a mirror and sing your ABCDEs:

Asymmetry – When both halves of the mole are not identical or symmetrical.

Border – The outer edge of the mole is blurred or not defined.

Color – Shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white or red appear.

Diameter – The size of the mole is larger than the end of a pencil eraser.

Elevation – A raised mole has a rough surface.

If any of the above signs are detected, it’s necessary to contact a dermatologist immediately.  Seeing a dermatologist on a regular basis is a good idea too, because their eyes are trained to detect abnormal moles.

Cleaning Power Without the Chemicals

It’s common to disinfect toilets, sinks, counters, etc. with bleach or other harsh chemicals that only leave behind a strong, intoxicating odor.  Sometimes an odor so suffocating that it causes you to leave the sparkling room before you even get a chance to enjoy it.  But cleaning products don’t have to be so abrasive to your body and environment.

A more natural and aromatic way to clean is to use essential oils.  Essential oils are liquids distilled from flowers, trees, roots, bushes, shrubs and seeds.  Essential oils were actually humankind’s first medicine, and there are 188 references to essential oils in the Bible.  Each oil has different properties and certain ones can protect the immune system, enhance your mood, stimulate or regenerate tissues and nerves, oxygenate cells and even destroy odors.

The simplest way to create a multi-purpose cleaner is to use a spray bottle and add 30 drops of Lemon essential oil to 8 ounces of water.  Lemon like other citrus fruits is a natural antibacterial and antiseptic, so this solution is good to use on counter tops, floors, toilets, etc.  Cinnamon can be used too as an antifungal, antiviral and antimicrobial.

Weight Loss Tips That Make All the Difference

Get ready for SUMMER! To help you shed some pounds, here are a few tips to make you go “hmmm”: 

  1. Think realistically about the weight you want to lose, because if your hopes are too high you run the risk of personal disappointment.  This disappointment can easily lead to giving up.

  1. Begin everyday with a healthy breakfast.  Try Kashi’s Go Lean oatmeal, because it contains 9 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 7 whole grains and only 6 grams of sugar.  Eating in the morning helps propel your metabolism, which will help you burn fat throughout the day.  If you hate eating breakfast, start with something small like fruit and work your way up to a healthy oatmeal or cereal.

  1. Do not starve yourself!  If you’re trying to lose weight, this is one of the worst things you can do, because you’re body will go into panic mode and start storing fat.

  1. If you feel your blood sugar dropping, do not eat candy.  At this point the first thing you feed your body will be stored as fat, so try eating nuts like walnuts, almonds or soy nuts to tide you over while you prepare a healthy meal.

  1. Stop drinking carbonated drinks like soda, because they contain too much sugar and may cause bloating.

  1. Drink water throughout the day to not only hydrate your body but to also flush out toxins.

  1. Start slow with your exercise habits.  For example, use 5-pound weights first and gradually work up to 10 pounds or exercise for 20 minutes a day and then increase your time spent exercising.  There’s no sense in over working your body, because then you’ll have to take time out to heal your muscles.

  1. When drinking fruit juice, make sure you buy 100% fruit juice.  Also portion your sugar intake by filling glasses with half juice and half water.

  1. Lastly, make your meals smaller in portion.

Keep these tips in mind and remember that all of your hard work will amount to a slimmer, leaner, stronger and more confident you!

Are you SAD?

            Winter is here!  What, no one excited?  True, it’s not the easiest thing to spring out of bed and take on the day with a positive attitude when all you see is a grey sky that makes going outside undesirable.  Then once it’s known that it’s only 30 some degrees or below 0, sneaking back into the warm bed covers seems like the best option.  However, we don’t always have this option, so the best way to beat the cold weather is to fight it, literally.

            Exercising in the morning is a good motivation technique in preparation of venturing outdoors in the blustering wind, cold rain or whatever else Mother Nature might use to discourage us.  The only tricky part is staying out of bed.  Here are some tips on how to start your day:

1.         Coffee lovers – preset your coffee the night before so the aroma of it                             persuades you to get out of bed;

2.         Be brave – once you hear your alarm, rip your covers off like a bandage                                    and head to the kitchen for a power breakfast;

3.         Get clean – rinse your face with cool water and brush your teeth, so you                                   feel more awake.

            Once a routine is established, waking up won’t seem like such a chore.  Incorporating exercise into your morning routine will leave you refreshed and rejuvenated, especially if you are affected by SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  The Seasonal Affective Disorder Association estimates that half a million people every winter are affected by SAD, which is associated with depression, lethargy, over eating, weakened immune system and over sleeping.  Causes of SAD are thought to be the lack of exposure to natural light during the winter months; Mayo Clinic noticed SAD is more common in people living in northern states, which are places that experience decreased daylight for months at a time.  But exercising can help you cope.

            Exercising on a regular basis can help to reduce stress and anxiety, which can accentuate SAD.  Also being in shape, helps you feel better about yourself and lightens your mood.  So designate a room, other than your bedroom, to work out in.  Take advantage of sunny days by bundling up and jogging or walking around your block.  Jump starting your adrenaline in the morning will not only help combat the shock of cold but will also help you stay motivated throughout the day.  For more information on how to treat SAD, go to http://www.nmha.org/infoctr/factsheets/27.cfm.
